VR gaming: Is it still the future?
Online gaming has existed for many years now. The market is still growing fast and the technology develops further. During the pandemic, the market revenue even grew faster. With this growth, developers have been looking for new ways to make money. One of them is virtual reality (VR). The last decade has been developing quickly, but is it going to reach its potential?

VR in the gaming industry contains around 3% of the North American market a total of 55 billion. With Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft Sony and Samsung looking into the market it seems to be expected that it is possible to make a fortune from it. However, I believe that VR gaming will never reach its potential. One of the reasons for the customers is that it is too expensive. With new technology coming this should be overcome. However, the technique is there for a couple of years now and people are not exactly in line to get the technology.

I believe this is a hype and in the long-term people will find it unhandy to buy the technique for their homes. Gaming as we know now does not need much space; you only need a console and can play almost anywhere. With VR, gaming takes up much more space, which not everybody has.

Next to that, there are already health issues that are caused by using a VR headset. The phenomenon is called vergence accommodation conflict, which is basically that one’s eyes focus on objects in the distance, while the screen is just a couple of centimetres away. This causes many people headaches, dizziness and even nausea after using it for a while (Matthews, 2020).

Concluding, VR is a brilliant technique that is being widely developed these days, but the future of gaming will stay a few metres away from the screen and not a few centimetres.
