Besides my Master’s, I also work at a law firm in the IT department. Nowadays, it seems like every company is curious about the pros and cons of chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and the place where I work is no exception. I think it’s a good thing for companies to explore this technology to see what it can do, and also important, to understand the potential risks it might have.

In our IT department, opinions on tools like ChatGPT vary among my different colleagues. Some of them have fully embraced it and use it daily to make their work easier and more efficient. Others are still trying it out and have their complaints about it (like privacy concerns). As for me, I can say I am a fan of generative AI. I use it to brainstorm ideas, summarize long texts, and play around with it. One of the things I do is that I use it check my assignments. I write the assignment and then put it into ChatGPT along with the grading criteria, and ask for feedback. It’s been a game-changer for me in improving my work and being more critical before handing it in.

Because I use it so much, ChatGPT has become like a buddy at work. I ask it to draft emails (without any private info, of course), help me brainstorm, or explain stuff I don’t understand. It’s super helpful, but I have to admit, it’s made me a bit lazy sometimes. If I don’t know something right away, I just turn to my trusty ChatGPT.

All of this got me thinking about how traditional companies, like law firms, can benefit from this technology and how they are going to manage the adoption. Not all, but some (older) lawyers are not a big fan of digital technology. How are you going to help them to work with generative AI? Does technology lead to differences between older and younger employees in how they work? As you can see, I have a lot of questions and I am curious about how technology is going to change traditional firms. How do other people feel about this? How do you think traditional companies are going to handle Generative AI? And how would you want your future employer to use tools like ChatGPT? I am excited to hear your thoughts on this!
