In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, introducing our parents to the latest technologies may be a rewarding but often difficult task. My parents, like many of their generation, were initially skeptical about ChatGPT, an AI language model they heard a little about but never experienced. In this blog, I’ll share our journey of how ChatGPT gradually won them over and how it bridged the generation gap in our household.
My parents, who grew up in an era different than today’s tech-savvy world, were understandably hesitant to embrace new technologies. ChatGPT is like science fiction to them. However, they were curious about it and agreed to give it a shot. They started by asking a simple question and ChatGPT immediately generated an accurate answer. It was an eye-opener for them. I began to show my parents various ways in which ChatGPT could be useful in their daily lives. For example, my dad had to make a summary of a meeting he had at work and used ChatGPT this time. He was shocked at how convenient the tool was.
My experience with ChatGPT demonstrates the transforming power of technology, even among individuals who may be skeptical at first. My parents, who once questioned the practical importance of AI, now recognize how beneficial ChatGPT can be in our lives. It is a reminder for me that, with patience and real-world examples, we can introduce other generations to the benefits of cutting-edge technology and bridge the generation gap. Did more of you have conversations with parents or maybe older co-workers about the possibilities of ChatGPT? Did you change their mind?
The next challenge for me is to introduce my grandparents to it ; Maybe some of you have ideas on how to do this.
Hi Marie-Louise, I’ve had almost the exact same experiences. My parents did hear of ChatGPT, but they did not believe in it and refused to use it. When some of their friends came over to dinner we talked about it again and I was determined to show them that it was an eye opening innovation. When we talked about going snowboarding and ski’ing they talked about which route to take in a new area where we had never been before. I asked ChatGPT what the best slopes were and how to go and it showed exactly what the best slopes were for beginners and intermediates. They were shocked. I finally got them! After that we talked about it a bit more, but they kinda laughed it away so I still don’t think that they have acknowlegded it’s power. I’m gonna be brutally honest and say showing your grandparets will be much and much harder. The only way to show them is by showing them something that they love but then expanded I think. Like showing generated art by their favorite artist. Or showing factual knowlegde about something like World War 2 (This is a favorite topic of my granddad). I hope they will see how fun and mindblowing AI can be!
