To be honest, before I started this master program, I was quite hesitant about the usefulness of AI tools such as ChatGPT. While my boyfriend was already becoming a fan of ChatGPT when it was first launched (early adopter as he is), I am more of a late bloomer when it comes to using technological tools. Don’t get me wrong, I am curious about new technologies, it’s just that I do not hop on a hype train so soon. I only want to use a new technology once I know it works well and is safe. But truth be told, I felt somewhat pressured to start using ChatGPT and sort like Generative AI tools when I started this master, so I gave it a shot. And I must admit, it can make life a lot easier.

My first encounter with ChatGPT’s stunning power, was when I asked it to summarize one of the HBR articles which we had to read for the information strategy course. I had read the article from start to end already, but I wondered if ChatGPT could make a good summary out of it, so I could use this later for studying. I was surprised how well the quality of the summary was. Thereafter, I also asked ChatGPT to design a logo for the study association of which I am the chairwoman this year (2024/2025). The current logo is not of a very good quality, so I wondered if ChatGPT could maybe make a new one. However, I must say that I am not very excited about the design of the logos ChatGPT made me (see below). But it was worth the try. I think in design, GenAI has still a lot to gain (although I have no doubt that there are better GenAI tools to use than ChatGPT when designing a logo.

And last but not least, I discovered this AI tool called ‘Perplexity.ai’, which, just like ChatGPT, answers almost all your questions, however this tool also has the benefit of listing the literature that it used to come up with the answers. It will list multiple different sources, such as scientific research articles and informative websites, as a reference for its given answers. This can help a lot when you have trouble finding the right search terms when looking for useful sources on Google Scholar yourself. Maybe Google should think about implementing such an AI tool in its Google Scholar platform as well. Because who would want to spent hours searching for sources, when an AI tool can give you the answers with the sources all at once? So, to conclude, AI tools have gotten me into their power. My eyes have been opened to the stunning power it bears within.
