People nowadays (especially those in the younger generations) are becoming increasingly more creative on the funcionalities they use AI for. Personally, I use GenAI for a lot of trivial activities such as cooking, deciding workout plans, asking for music recommendations and gift ideas, etc. I’m afraid I’ve become one of those people who find themselves talking to ChatGPT as if it were a normal person.
One of the things that I enjoy using ChatGPT for the most is to help me decide travel itineraries. A few months ago, I decided to test GenAI tools to help me plan my trips, and the results were amazing.
The first trip I tried planning was a 4-day stay in Budapest. I used ChatGPT to create an itinerary tailored to my interests (including historical sites, local cuisine, and some nightlife suggestions), and it suggested a perfect balance of activities: from visiting the iconic Buda Castle and thermal baths to exploring hidden gems like the ruin bars. It even helped me optimize the schedule and itineraries, ensuring I had enough time to enjoy each location without feeling rushed or going back and forth.
Besides these functionalities, I also find it incredibly useful to ask ChatGPT for concise background information on the places I’m visiting. Since I enjoy learning the history behind what I’m seeing, it provides a quick yet insightful overview of landmarks, cultural significance, and even local stories. This way, I can appreciate each location on a deeper level without having to search through multiple sources. It feels like having a personal tour guide, always ready with interesting facts to improve my travel experience.
Now that I live in the Netherlands, I’m planning to take this AI trip-planning to a new level. When I find the time, I’ll use ChatGPT to help me plan 1-day getaways to different cities around the country. Whether it’s a visit to the windmills in Kinderdijk or a day spent exploring Utrecht’s canals, this tool offers personalized suggestions based on travel time and local events. It even recommends which trains to take, saving me the hassle of figuring out transportation on my own.
It’s like having a personal travel assistant that tailors each trip exactly to my preferences, and a tour guide that tells me everything I want to know about the places I visit.
Have you ever tried this on your trips? Which other questions or suggestions do you ask ChatGPT when you’re planning your travels?
