In this blog I will illustrate how Chatty has been helping me get back at math for my master’s degree. This is not the field where I excel the most, nor the one that gets me more excited either. Even though the road to an answer is hard to go through, it’s nice to know a tool that helps me in first steps.
This all started by me voluntarily taking advantage of ChatGPT premium, if I am paying all this money then he better explain the whole concept of math to me, give me detailed graphs and illustrate math problems like I’m 5. Why math though? Well, lecture of 5 of Information Strategy (yes, the one about information goods) contained equations to decipher the personalized pricing and group pricing of certain goods.
In a very embarrasing scenario, I will reveal my chats:

Superficially, this is me trying to get my money’s worth; at its core, this is me startegically using AI to support me through my “weaknesses”. Even though I get amazing explanations of these cases in the lectures, as a student that also has to pay attention to other courses, different deadlines, extracurriculars, all information is not immediately stored in my brain or sometimes it is harder to fully process it or understand it. With Chatty I am able to revisit this information and can re-explain to me the topics where I need more support and adapt to my level of understandment.
In essence, I see this not as outsourcing my learning, but optimizing it. I still attend the lectures, read the material, make my own notes, do the homework, but AI helps me fill in the gaps, clarify what I missed and most importantly, reinforce what I learned. If there is a situation where I hate being stuck on, is to keep studying without fully comprehending the topic, Chatty helps me clarify my doubts and give me feedback on my understanding of the matter.
When I first read the title of your article, I could immidiately relate to it (quite frankly, my blog is also about using ChatGPT for education purposes). I feel like before the arrival of “Chatty”, if you weren’t good at maths at school, you would try to pick a university major that wouldn’t even come close to quantitative subjects. However, I feel that our friend ChatGPT is really changing the way we perceive math: everything feels so much more doable since Chat can not only break everything down to you into the smallest parts, but also pick a way of explaining that you like most.
P.S best of luck with the Pricing lecture!
I love this Sebastian! It’s really nice that you shared the actual chat, super relatable and honestly nothing embarrassing about asking what the vertical intercept is (I literally asked the same question the first time I saw that demand curve haha). Your point about paying for ChatGPT and wanting to get real value out of it also makes total sense. When I thought about it, in high school I spent almost the same amount for one or two hours of private math tutoring what I pay now as a monthly subscription fee… and now you basically get a tutor that answers unlimited questions at 2 a.m. with patience level of 100. That is a pretty good deal if you ask me.
I also like how you framed using AI as filling gaps instead of outsourcing learning. You still go to lectures, make notes, and then use the bot to clarify and reinforce. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the screenshots. And good luck with the price calculations!
