Hi,

We were all talking about web 2.0 and stuff like that. That raised the question about what comes after web 2.0. So I started so search about web 3.0.

First short about Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is not technology more advanced then web 1.0, but the way web builders build their websites and users uses the websites. Web 2.0 also allow users to interact and collaborate with each other, with social media. Examples of Web 2.0 are social networking sites, like twitter and Facebook, but also blogs, video sharing sites etc.

Web 3.0

The definition of web 3.0 vary greatly. One belief is that the most important features are the semantic web (provides a common framework that allows date to be shared and reused across application). With semantic web their also comes personalization. With this last personalization, technology is being used to accommodate the differences between individuals. The internet will be more focused on the user and will show what the user wants it to show. Conrad Wolfram argued that Web 3.0 is where the computer is generating new information, rather than humans.

And there are more: John Smart defines web 3.0 as the first-generation Metaverse, this is were the virtual and physical world will be mixed), that include 3D-simulations and things like the SIMS look-a-likes.

The all agree: Web 3.0 will allow the user to sit back and let the internet do all of the work for them.

Social media makes office-employees more productive

In a recent article is said that social media make office-employees more productive. The researches of the VU in Amsterdam had first conducted a research with student. The research had been done as next:

One side of the class was allowed to use social media apps when the want to use it, so no restrictions just like we use it. The other part of the class may only use social media apps twice for three minutes. After the college students had a test about the given college. The group students that got twice three minutes for social media had an average of 0,8 higher than the other group who can use social media whenever they want.

Also employees with an office job were tested (of course in a different way). A group of 162 employees had been monitored about how long they did about a certain job. They also were asked to fill in some questionnaires about concentration, sensitiveness for distraction etc. Here also two groups were formed, one could use social media as they always had done, and the other group could use social media for 3 minutes per hour. As expected: the prodoctivity in the 3-minutes group, the productivity was much higher.

Well, some questions raised when I read the article. First you can say ok, it seems obvious, you spend more time to work when you don’t use social media all the time. But during this experiment, there could be the hawthorne effect. So how valuable the study is, is I think doubtful.

Homework assignment: Diffusion and Social Influence

First I will tell you something about these weeks articles and after this short discussion I’ll something about my two examples.

The first article was about the effectives of worth of mouth (WOM) and viral product design. Research has shown us that products with passive-broadcast viral messaging capabilities generates a 246% increase in local peer influence and social contagion. Where adding active personalized viral messaging, only increase for a additional 98%. This against the feeling of most people about this subject. Active personalized viral messaging however is more effective in encouraging adoption per message and therefore is correlated with more user engagement and sustained product use.

The second article questions some important assumptions. For instance that contagion need not to be as important as always had been thought or the importance of opinion leaders in speeding up the acceptance of new product. After these raised questions they investigate this opinion leadership and social contagion on the adoption off a new product.

The last article shows us how important Twitter can be for companies. The power of Twitter is increasing and so is the influence of this platform. Companies need to be close to this platform because the image of their brand can be made or crushed in the customer’s tweets. It shows how powerful the consumers are and how less influence companies have on social media like Twitter.

Now a short introduction of the two examples I have chosen, a more thorough explanation I will give you tomorrow during the poster presentation:

Klout, How influencing are you?

With Klout people can see how influencing they are in their (online) social network. They do this by giving you a Klout-Score and this reveals your influence, where 100 is very influencing and 0 is not any influence. This Score is based on the times you retweet (and others retweeting your tweets), number of status updates etc. So to improve this score you have to be more active on Facebook / Twitter etc. By example, Justin Bieber has a score of 92!

Rankur, Monitor your online reputation!

Rankur shows companies their online reputation. This online platform uses all kind of sources, like Facebook, Twitter but also webpages etc. With this information they can do sentiment analyses (like last weeks tool Crowdflower) but you can also see the demographic variables of your consumers and many other things. The basic information is for free, but for more advanced options like sentiment analyses you have to pay.

Hi,

I just read the post written by Joyce about Amanda Todd. The story is really awful but it let you think about the power social media like Facebook has. You really have to be careful what you post on sites like facebook and twitter. I searched for an site with some tips to help you preventing posting to much information. The information is for young girls but I think we all can learn from this!

The first point is that you shouldn’t post information online that contains information about arguments with friends and girl/boyfriends. This information can be used against you and therefore you should not post this kind of information.

The second point: do not post your departure date of your vacation online. When you are still living with your parents it is not a problem but when you are living alone or with your girl/boyfriend you shouldn’t post this. The information will be online and everybody can abuse this information. It is not nice to come home and your whole house is empty!

Third point, do not post private information of your family online without their permission. You don’t want to be responsible for problems caused by these (private) information!

Fourth point, do not post half nude pictures and drunk pictures online. If you want somebody to see these, send them a pm or a message, but ones the pictures is online you cant take them offline anymore! Your future boss may not like the pics you post now online at all!

Well these point may seem obvious, but think of the story of Amanda Todd, you really have to be careful online!

This article raise the question whether Social Media should be as free as it is today. Should there be restrictions or how can we prevent such things from happening? And because Social Media is gaining popularity, we probably will hear more of these kind of awful stories in the future.

What do you think what should happen to prevent such stories? More control, or is freedom to important on the internet?
