Yes, we all know by now that generative AI is not a substitute for a real source of knowledge like an academic database. But generative AI can be so much more than that. Why do schools think using AI to write texts is the only way to use it for academic writing? I believe that if used correctly it can help students to create quality writing. Not by letting it write the texts for them but by helping the students enhance their writing style.

These days AI is getting adopted by more and more people in the workplace. So why not embrace the future and teach students how to correctly use AI to enhance their writing? Schools are worried that by using AI, students will just let the AI write everything for them resulting in possible incorrect statements and loss of originality. That’s why schools should teach students how to use it in a way that improves their writing instead of decreasing it. Well, I hear you asking: “How should it be used then?”. Instead of letting it write your complete essay from scratch, it should first help you in the ideation phase. By interacting with AI you can more efficiently plan out what you want to write. Next, you should still do the research part. Find information from reputable sources and write about it. Now comes the fun part, if you are just like me and are not a good writer you can ask AI to enhance the text to make it more comprehensive, or give it a specific tone like professional or academic. This will in most cases enhance the text, by creating well-structured sentences while still containing your own original story. I know what you’re going to say, “Students should be able to write perfect theses in academic writing.” Well of course students should know how to write but a little help could help immensely. For someone like me who has dyslexia and never was a hero at grammar and writing structured sentences, it could really help. And of course, AI should not replace a human but it sure can make its life a bit easier and even make better written texts. I really hope that schools look at AI tools not as an enemy but as a friend. Please adopt AI, and teach students how to use the magic that is generative AI.

Notion AI changed the way I study

In this blog, I will write about my experience with the generative AI tool from Notion. Notion is a program that provides workspaces for individuals to organize their notes and other information (Notion, n.d.-a). I personally have been using notion for the past two years for things like note taking and keeping track of all things related to my studies. I even used it to keep track of my travel schedule. A few months ago, Notion added a new feature to their program called Notion AI. Notion AI is a generative artificial intelligence tool that allows users to apply AI technology to their Notion workflow (Notion, n.d.-b). My first experience with the AI feature was when planning my trip to Croatia this summer. I asked the AI in my workspace to create an itinerary for a trip to Croatia based on some cities and things I wanted to do. After a second the tool started writing a detailed itinerary for my trip. Though not perfect, it gave me a structure that I could improve and work with to plan out my vacation. Where Notion AI differs from AI tools like Chat-GPT and Bard, is that it lives in your workspace. When taking notes you can ask the tool to organize them and take out some of the key points, it then will organize your written notes and give you key points right where you work. This way you don’t have to go out of your way to go to the Chat-GPT website and copy/paste the answers. Within Notion AI there are a ton of features that help with productivity and organization. To use Notion AI all you have to do is press the space bar on a new line and you will be able to ask the AI anything. Where the tool shines is summarizing, finding to-do’s, explaining, improving writing, and helping you brainstorm ideas. And because it’s integrated within Notion, you can ask to create anything with the already existing features of Notion. Notion AI is currently based on GPT-3.5 so answer-wise it will be less complex than ChatGPT-4 but through the integration with your workspace it makes all the difference (Nuclino, n.d.). I personally can’t wait for Notion AI to upgrade to GPT-4 so the tool can help me with even more complex tasks. Maybe Notion can also integrate a feature where you can let the AI tool manage your studying plan and help you keep on track. Using the tool while working really feels like one step further into the future of learning and studying. Notion AI made taking notes easy and efficient for me and I will be using it for the coming year to help me with my studies. I would highly recommend Notion and Notion AI. Notion is free to use and gives you endless options to organize and keep track of your personal, study, or work life. Notion AI is $10 per month which is cheaper than ChatGPT Plus ($20)(OpenAI, n.d.). There is a free trial available for all Notion users. In the trial, you will get access to 40 prompts to get used to the tool. I believe it is worth it because it made me way more productive during my studies. If you have any questions about Notion or Notion AI please feel free to ask.
