Around 25 percent of the catering in the Netherlands doesn’t use social media. In 2015 that’s a large percentage and even 50 percent of the 75 percent does not use social media properly. During the years the use of social media has become more and more important, it’s not only an advertisement tool but you need to create a bond with your customers through social media.

You have a lot of platforms which can be used to to express your restaurant. The first one is WhatsApp, which is forgotten by a lot of restaurants. We don’t want you to stalk your customers, but use WhatsApp to make reservations and even for feedback from your customers. It’s quicker and easier than email or phone calls.

The next one is Facebook, which is a popular one among the restaurant. A lot of them use it to give information about the opening hours and address. Thereby they also post contests to win free lunches or make advertisements about a new product. At the moment a lot of restaurant are glad when they have a a lot of likes, but they forget that comments and shares attract more attention. Create contests where for example people need to tag each other, this will put your company in the spotlights and eventually you restaurant will be showed at the newsfeed of a lot of people.

Besides the traditional sharing and liking on Facebook, the upcoming social media as Instagram and Snapchat are also of great value to the restaurant. Pictures say more than words, that’s the rule where restaurants should live by. Create beautiful pictures of food en drinks and show them to the world. People like colourful pictures, inspiration and passion behind the images. It will create more value to your restaurant. Snapchat can be used to give daily customers a look behind the scenes. Customers love transpiration en thereby they will promote your restaurant more and more off- and online.

Besides the connection with customers it’s also important to be active at social media platforms such as LinkedIn. Expand your network and show what you can offer for other companies, such as lunches. Several companies will try this out and if it goes good, than they will promote it to other companies and your network will expand which will have a positive influence on your image.

With all the social media platforms it’s important you keep your information up to date and you keep interacting with your customers. Good interaction with customers will result in loyalty and free offline marketing and good reviews will attract new customers in the future. The customers should become a fan of your restaurant and thereby it’s important to attract more publicity. One of the ways to attract publicity is by taking part in a contest. An example is ‘The Bogue Gouden Burger Spatel’, which is hold every year in Rotterdam. This contest is about which restaurant has the best burger in town.

The next level for the Music Industry

Once upon a time there were artists and bands who record a song and made a lot of effort to publish songs and get attention for it. The artists, bands and record label would make money through the sales of the CD’s. Nowadays everything is different, it is not that hard anymore to sell your song and get noticed by the mass. Social Media is the keyword for this huge change in the music industry. What are the advantages sand disadvantages of Social Media for the music Industry.

First of all Social Media has a wider range for the artists and bands than they had before. A new song or any updates can be seen by thousands and sometimes millions of people around the whole world. This means more publicity for the artists and bands. Artists can also answer to more messages of their fans, which is easier and quicker through social media. Thereby you could get more feedback and opinions of a lot of people for your new tracks or any new suggestions for a new track.

With the introduction of social media there were also the introductions of other website which used metrics to measure the influence of fans on artists and bands. With certain apps you could even measure how and where people blogged about you or your track. Social Media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram became more popular to artists to share their thoughts and new updates. Through metric Apps you could measure for example in which region people retweeted your tweet the most.

Another advantage was given to new artists. Instead of going to record labels or trying to get a contract, you could just record a song by yourself and upload it to the web. If the song is good, it will be shared and liked through Youtube and Facebook, which gives you more publicity than than back in the days.

Besides the advantages the improvements in the music industry had also disadvantages. People could share a lot more illegal digital downloads through social media platforms, which is disadvantageous compared to legal downloads for example through iTunes. Besides the illegal downloads, there was also the end of the old school music televisions such as MTV. The online media and sharing through social media platform took over the music television.

Looking at the reality we can find a living example of a star made by Youtube. Justin Bieber is the kid who used Youtube to eventually turn in to a worldwide star. Personally I don’t think he is a star, but a disappointment tot the music industry, but opinions can differ at this point. But what does the new era of music teach us. More and more it is not only about the song of the artist but about the artist himself. Back in the days the song needed to be the best to get a chance at the record label. Nowadays people are happy with a regular good song if it is produced by a great artists, so there is a shift going on from the songs to the artists himself. This is a big disadvantage for the music industry, where the focus need to be on the music itself instead of the artist.

One af the last improvements is the streaming of music through platforms as Soundcloud and Mixcloud. Most of the times original tracks are modified and mixed in mixtapes. The designed music tracks brings new experience to the listener. Looking at the latest improvement in the music industry, what do you think the future will look like? Will the music industry become less popular and how do you think the artists can battle the fight against the illegal downloads.

What will the future bring us? Most of the people would think that social commerce is the future. Social commerce is the future, but it’s important to know how we can effectively use social commerce and what the near future of social commerce will look like.

First of all it’s important to look at the reasons why people like to go shopping. Besides the things they want to buy, people like to hang out with friends. The social aspect of shopping is very important. Looking at digital retailing, it’s good to consider how we could add the social presence to digital retailing.

First of all it’s important to integrate navigation support in to the social commerce platform. Navigation support could be divided in shared navigation and separate navigation, thereby it’s also important to still be able to communicate with each other. As communication support there are two possibilities; ‘Voice Chat‘ and ‘Text Chat’. Studies showed that Shared navigation support in combination with voice chat ensures the highest impact on social presence. The explanation is that Shared Navigation Support will give both the co-shoppers the same screen, which helps to avoid misunderstanding during shopping. Voice Chat on the other hand has more media richness than text chat.

Futures as liking, commenting and sharing will give your brand a boost on social media and will affect social commerce on a positive or negative way. It’s important to respond on the right way to especially the negative comments. Social Customer Relationship Management is a must during the integration of social commerce. After all it will create customer lifetime value which will be valuable to companies. Eventually it will also create more loyal customers, when the customer service is better than competitors.

For the future possibilities you should look to the integration of social commerce in to mobile devices and mobile apps such as Instagram and Pinterest. These social media platform have for example a lot of fashion pages. These companies can promote their products through Instagram and Pinterest, whereby customers will be able to directly check-out through the social media app. With an integration of social media, e-commerce and mobile commerce this will lead to ‘Social Mobile Commerce‘. People have their mobile devices almost always with them, which makes it easier and quicker to purchase an item. This is a win-win situation for the customer and the company, whereby the customer needs less time to shop and the company will obtain more sales. Customers on their behave can quickly share their stories and purchase through social media which will affect other potential customers.

The conclusion is that the future of social commerce lies in the extension of social commerce to mobile devices, what lead to ‘Social Mobile Commerce‘. Thereby it’s important to combine mobile social commerce with ‘Social Customer Relationship Management‘.

Terrorism using Social Media

Social media is often used by companies for adverting or sharing new information with the world. It gives companies access to the global world, instead of the local areas. The global accessibility of social media van be seen as a big advantage, but also as a disadvantage. What to think about terrorism, which uses social media platform in order to share their thoughts about the world.

The use of social media by terrorists was also recognized by Robert Hannigan, the head of GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarter). He gave a several examples which were used by terrorists in order to spread their ideas or covering their identities. Terrorists now have access to encryption tools, which they use to cover their identities.

Isis uses many social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr. They share their ideas and even videos of prisoners who are getting tortured or killed. Even blocking these terrorists account does not help, because Isis uses thousands accounts in order to be always online and active on social media. This problem has even been on the CNN News where they have discussed about Twitter which has been used multiple times by terrorist to spread their message.

Even Al-Qaeda is using social media platforms in order to influence other people to follow their thoughts or by sending manipulative texts or images. There is a slight different between the use of social media by Al-Qaeda and Isis. Isis has more a directive approach by even sending beheading videos to the world.

The use of social media as a marketing tool for companies and government is a well known example, but what can we do to stop or minimize the use of social media by terrorists. Only by blocking accounts of terrorist we won’t stop terrorism, because it’s easy to make another account. Should some social media platform block their platform for certain countries? Another solution could be by making some social media platforms more personal by asking for your passport numbers for example. It sounds crazy but you could minimize the use of social media by terrorism through this action. What other ideas do you have to solve or minimize this problem?
