Want to practice for your exams?

I was thinking of how was going to prepare for my DBA and IS exams, summarising the content of the course and trying to answer the learning goals is what I came up with. Pretty standard right?

It all changed when I came across this AI tool! It’s called MagicForm, what does it do?

Well, let me show you. Take for example the lecture notes from DBA, a long piece of text containing all the information you might need to answer the MC questions. Copy page 8 and a bit more on page 9, max 6000 words in the free version of the tool (only text as well), and paste it inside the MagicForm. Specify the question type, number of questions and language. Go grab your cup of coffee while the form does it’s magic.

The result?

A test for you: https://forms.gle/ryp51B49hiSDaZXo9

See in the image below, an example of a question that was generated.

I’m actually thinking that if I give the MagicForm text that contains the answers to the practice exam, it might generate similar questions to the practice exam, and thus vice versa for the exam right?. That would be an extremely interesting situation. Thus I went out to test my hypothesis. Which turned out to be harder than expected. I might have to feed the form my summary/notes for better questions.

I couldn’t prove it confirm my hypothesis due to two things: lack of clear textual description and the fact that questions on an exam require you to apply knowledge. Whereas the MagicForm only creates questions aimed at repetition.

My conclusion is that the MagicForm can create questions for yourself to see if you remember the knowledge that you have to apply and it could serve a role at the end of a lecture to provide some interactivity and test if the audience has been paying attention but to really practice for the exam you’ll have to come up with the questions yourself.

Do you ever feel uninspired or overwhelmed by a task that you have to perform?

Well I did, having to write this blog post turned out to be on my mind a lot. I kept searching for original and useful AI tools that were freely available and could be the subject of an interesting blog post. <insert> Quazilla: https://www.joinsquad.co/quazilla <insert>

I was curious and decided to say Hi to Quazilla on WhatsApp. Almost immediately the mysterious creature greeted me back!

I was surprised and excited to communicate more with him and experience what kind of wisdom this ancient dinosaur could share with me. So I told him my tasks for the day, study a lot!

That is quite something right!? it even threw in a quote to motivate me which I personally liked a lot. So, promising first messages from Quazilla, however, it cannot do everything. He is limited in his experience of time, so when I asked to send me a motivational message every hour, he said it was not possible. But, he did sprinkle in another quote:

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts”

Winston Chuchill (according to Quazilla at least)

I also asked it for tips and told him that I was feeling distracted and it promptly recommended me to divide my work in smaller pieces and use the Pomodoro technique, pretty standard advice but nonetheless nice reminders to actually do it!

The next day we wished each other good morning and I told him that I wanted write my IS assignment and this blog post and was again pleasantly surprised by the response:

To conclude, if you are ever needing some motivation or a joke (he told me one when I was stuck for a bit) you could text a friend, but you could also text Quazilla, your personal motivational dinosaur. I’ll show you his latest response too 🙂

Sweat and Pixels II: Augmenting, Not Replacing Personal Trainers

In my previous contribution to this blog, “Sweat and Pixels: Is ChatGPT the New Personal Trainer?”, I discussed the potential of generative AI in disrupting the fitness industry, specifically personal trainer related tasks. Experimenting with AI-generated training schedules, and their ability to incorporate progression from users. While it showed a lot of potential, and it’s positive contribution to the fitness world was recognized by multiple readers. The personal trainer’s motivational role was located as unreplaceable. That is why in this post, I will explore the possibility of AI working together with Personal Trainers, combining the best of both worlds.

AI-Assisted Training

A fitness industry without some form of AI or digital systems is unthinkable. From smartwatches, to for instance, Tempo, a smart home gym that uses computer vision (Garun, 2020). AI services a function and has been integrated in most tools linked to fitness. Assisting users on their fitness journey.

The Personal Trainer’s Role in the Digital World

One of the key questions posted in the previous discussion was whether or not personal trainers were still useful? The conclusion was, and is, that while some tasks are ready to be replaced by GenAI systems, others are not. Tasks that include some aspect of motivation and/or emotion still require a humans (e.g. personal trainers) involvement.

Best of Both Worlds

Instead of letting the user choose one, it might be in a personal trainer’s best interest to adopt to the digital era and adjust their daily operations and tasks. Making a shift towards an AI enhanced personal trainer experience, which could contribute to the following points:

Personalization
As discussed in the previous post, GenAI is an excellent tool that is capable of generating quick, clear, and personalised training schedules. This would allow trainers to develop a base schedule with minimal information and a couple of clicks.

Efficiency
The time that is won by automating the easier tasks, personal trainers can focus their attention to more personalised in-person coaching and motivating their clients.

The Future of Personal Training

While the world digitalizing, industries are changing and need to adapt accordingly. The fitness industry, specifically personal training is one of them. While the industry might not be replaced by (Generative) AI, it can be augmented by (Generative) AI. In my opinion I think the use of (Generative) AI could improve trainers’ tasks by making their time more efficient and well spend, and might become mandatory to stay relevant. Enabling trainers to focus more on personalization and motivational aspects of their job and letting AI handle the automatable parts. Let me know what you think, will the combination be the future, or do you think we could be better of with just AI/Personal trainers?
